Female Magazine: The Analogue Issue

For Female’s fourth annual Art & Design Issue, the magazine asked us to reinterpret the letter it is named for. The issue considered a return to the handmade in a moment moving quickly towards the digital. The brief was fashion; we answered in porcelain.

Rather than depict textiles, we used clay to hold their trace. Lace and other fabrics were pressed into the surface of the F, leaving their weave and ornament behind after the cloth was lifted away—the softness of textile held in fired porcelain.

Red thread was stitched through the form and left deliberately undone. Its irregular line interrupts the pristine white surface: a visible mark of the hand, and an unravelling just beyond the facade.
